Day +4: Infection

They told me it was inevitable but even so part of you still hopes it won't happen to you. I am not however a medical miracle so late last night my temperature started to rise slowly but constantly until it got to a high point of 38.5 degrees, at which point they decided they needed to take some action. I was reviewed by the on-call doctor and put immediately onto intravenous broad spectrum antibiotics. So far these seem to have had the desired effect, my temperature has now come down to 37.5. The scarey thought is how quickly these bacteria move to take advantage when your defences are down. The doctors think this may have been a break away faction of Mr Yakult's friendly bacteria high on drink and drugs who got involved in a killing frenzy. The reason for this is that the Melphalan I took (was given) has caused my intestines to become thick and less flexible and therefore prone to tearing allowing those normally tasked with doing good things to turn to the dark side.

The rest of my world: still can't really keep anything down so they're now threatening to start feeding me, which I can't say I'm really happy about. If they can just resolve the nausea things would be so much better all round.

Hi Rory, All sounds very medieval. I really hope you are able to start posting how good you feel soon. Glad to see the chemo hasn't killed off your sense of humor.

Love, Chris & Sandra

Well Rory you know what they say you can't keep a good man down and you certainly are a good 'un! It's great to have you on again but your side kick did a good job while you were sleeping. Hang on in there and all being well the sickness will stop soon and let your body recover a bit.In the meantime we are with you in spirit constantly all our love Mum and Dad XXX

Yo Rory

Delighted to join the band of brothers now that I've mastered the technology.

We're all rooting for you and if you have any of those broad spectrum antibio's to spare I wouldn't mind keeping them in hand for the forthcoming AGM (just in case).

So they're threatening to feed you? Just say the word and we'll be round with an Efes special or, for the more discerning palate, a Dave Watts curry.

All the best from a rather aromatic newsroom

Hi Rory

It's good to have you back on the blog. Your proxy did a good job so you will need to keep on your toes.

I am pleased to see the antibiotics have suppressed the uprising of the UBF (unpopular bacteria front or is that the unpopular front of bacteria).

I hope they get the nausea under control soon

We have everything crossed here too

Love Iain

Hello Rory
Apparently I got your fitness rating going in the wrong direction yesterday! I always did have a terrible sense of direction. Do hope you will soon be travelling the right way and will be eating like a horse again! We saw 104 scoters off Start Point on Saturday.
With love as ever
AMIL and AFIL
